THE GAME: Today's non conference game features the Hornets of Emporia State University and the Tigers of Fort Hays State University;
This is the season opener for both teams. It marks the seventh time in ten seasons the Tigers and Hornets have played on opening day
THE SERIES: ESU leads the series against FHSU 42-30-2 but the Tigers won last year's game 16-10 at Emporia, Kan, The Hornets won
the previous three games. The Tigers are 4-6 against the Hornets in the last ten seasons.
LASJLYJABi The Tigers spoiled the debut of former Nebraska Cornhusker and Wichita Collegiate star DeAngelo Evans by defeating the
Hornets 16-10 in front of 7.305 fans at Welch Stadium, the largest opening home crowd in school history. Evans scored on the third play of
the game to put ESU up 7-0, but FHSU responded with 13 unanswered first quarter points and would not trail again. Tiger QB Jason Brown
threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns in his Tiger debut and the black and gold defense held Evans to 93 yards rushing on 20 carries It
was the Tigers third victory at Welch Stadium since 1990.
THE COACHE$: Tim O'Connor is in his first season of directing the FHSU football program. The Boise State University graduate has been
a Tiger assistant coach since 1 992. His first squad was picked by conference coaches to finish fourth in the RMAC this season. Hornets head
coach David Wiemers is also in his first season after taking over for Jerry Kill who resigned last spring. Wiemers spent the past two years
as the Hornets Assistant Head Coach and offensive coordinator. He also has coaching experience at Saginaw Valley St, Pittsburg St, and
Seaman High School in Topeka,
EMPORIA STATE UNIVERSITY: The Hornets return 41 letterwinners and 16 starters from a team that went 6-5^n 2000, ESU was picked
to finish 7th in the MIAA pre-season coaches poll. 7 starters return on offense including quarterback Kelton Copeland (1,352 yds/pass. 16
TD's - 573 yds/rush. 3 TD's) who started all 11 games for the Hornets last season. Copeland lost his favorite target in All-American wide
receiver Lester McCoy, but ESU returns their next top seven receivers. Included in that group is Dan Williams who caught 13 passes for 130
yards and 1 TD. The offense also lost first team All-MIAA runningback DeAngelo Evans. Hell be replaced in the lineup by Shon Wells (31 -
175) and Tyler Paul (24-146). The offensive line welcome's back four starters from a year ago including Wes Hill who was an honorable
mention all-conference performer last season. Senior tight end Jason Ferguson was also honorable mention All-MIAA,
Defensively, ESU will be led by first team All-MIAA standout Dontaye McCoy, a junior strong safety who led the MIAA with 6 interceptions
and led the team with 4 sacks, Charles Greer also returns to a solid Hornet secondary after making 71 tackles and earning honorable mention
all-conference honors. Two starters return at linebacker including Chad Pratz (H.M. All-MIAA) and Brent Matzke (64 tackles/ 1 inf,/ 2 fumble
recoveries). Overall, 8 starters return on defense. Punter Pat Amon returns after averaging 36.8 yards per punt in 2000.
FORT HA YSjsTA TE UNIVERSI TY: Quarterback Jason Brown returns to lead the offense after throwing for 1,812 yards and 17 touchdowns
last season. Transfer Jason Broom has impressed in pre-season drills at tailback and will share time with veteran Vinnie Walker at that
position. Broom scored 51 career touchdowns at Sapulpa (QK) High School where he led the state in rushing his senior season with over
2,400 yards on the ground. He averaged 6.4 yards per carry last season at Northeastern Oklahoma State. The offensive line has 3 starters
back from a year ago including first team All-RMAC center Kyle Johnson. Tight end Brandon Pishny is back after being named to the honorable
mention all-conference team. At receiver, the Tigers have several players looking to make an impact in their first game. Ness City sophomore
Beau Rebel is the top returning receiver after catching 23 passes for 352 yards and a touchdown in 2000,
FHSU has 7 starters back on defense from a unit that finished second in the RMAC in 2000. The unit includes first team All-RMAC
defensive tackle Casey Seyfert. Last season the Beloit senior tied for the team lead with 14 tackles for loss. Free Safety Marc Henry and
defensive end Jason Pietrzyk also return after earning honorable mention all-conference honors a year ago. The other returning starters
include linebacker Tony Crough. defensive end Jason Dechant and strong safety Jace Pavlovich. FHSU lost All-American punter Adam Ryan
to graduation but welcomes back kicker Wes Simoneau. Simoneau was red-shirted last season with an injury but returns this season needing
6 field goals and 41 points to break two career kicking marks currently held by former Tiger Roy Miller.
